i once plugged the monitor into the onboard gfx instead of the gfx card and got annoyed that nothing was showing (for my defence it wasnt my pc and i wasnt told that it had a gfx card)

no, what you did was good. Thats what your meant to do.
Plug the monitor cable into the slot on the gfx card not the one on the mobo. If it still doesnt work. search google for similar issues with the same gfx card, if that doesnt work try the card in another pc.

Also make sure you push firmly on the gfx card when putting it in, as gfx cards and pci cards dont always go in well. If all else fails assume it is DOA and contact the seller to send it off for a replacement or refund.

i pluged the moniter plug into the gfx card like they said to do and not to plug it in where its originally is (on the computer tower)

I had problems one time. If its pci, sometimes you really have to push it in the slot. You might want to take it out, then tap it back in harder than the time before.
    Worked for me.
