    yes. They will run cs:s.
The ATI cards will perform better in Half life engine games (cs).
The Nvidia card will perform better in Opengl games (Doom 3).

As you only have 512mb ram I would also suggest another stick. BTW dont buy from bestbuy they seem extremely overpriced.

i suggest you get a new mobo....
then get the ati x800 gto
then another stick of 512 of ram
MAKE SURE your powersupply can handle all those stuff! (gfx card)
to find out just look at how much watt is uses and check your powersupply to see how much power it produces.
ALSO don't just get a good card you need to balance your pc out, a good gfx card with crappy memory and crappy cpu is not going to get you anywhere.
get a new cpu if thats possible.
i can get you the best deals of computer parts if you want,
    won't cost over $400
that will be enough to turn your rig into a decent gaming machine.

    get these....
    mobo: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16813131540

    gfx card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16814150098
this card is better then x800gt and its way cheaper because its on holiday deal....plus if you get that mobo and use this card, later on you can buy another same pair and put those in sli.

    CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16819103535

    Ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?...N82E16820145450
this set of ram is really good deal, its fast for sure and will help on your gaming.

tally it up and it will be maybe over 400 bucks but still this is really good deal to get, hell you can even play bf2 or fear with this.

LOL a 6600gt is NOT better than a x800. LOL.

He doesnt want to spend much so there is no need to upgrade everything.

I would suggest the MX518 (amazing mouse!) and maybe switching the headset to a Sennhieser PC150 which is $46.00 at newegg but amazon.com has some for as low as about $35.00.
