    Attention, UK members of Gamerenders:

    The Test
    • Click on Start->Run
    • Type cmd in the window and click ok
    • In the window that pops up type ping -n 100 bbc.co.uk
This will send 100 packets to bbc.co.uk and time how long it takes to get a reply.

    The Results

I've highlighted what you've got to look out for...

(FYI: these are a friends' stats who lives in London)

Ping statistics for (IP Removed as per his request)
    Packets: Sent = 100, Received = 100, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
    Minimum = 14ms, Maximum = 55ms, Average = 19ms

Packet Loss Percentage: This is the percentage of packets for which no reply was received...any packet loss is unacceptable!!!!

Maximum Round-Trip Time: This is the total time it takes to upload a packet to bbc.co.uk and then download the reply to your PC.
    • A value less than 30 is brilliant
    • A value greater than 30 and less than 50 is good
    • A value greater than 50 and less than 80 is ok, but you might want to keep an eye on it.
    • A value greater than 80 is unacceptable!!!!!
Average Round-Trip Time: This is the average for the 100 packets. If the value goes above 40, the average response time is looking quite sluggish.

What To Do If You Get Anything Unacceptable

Anthing marked as unacceptable will cause noticable lag if you use your connection for gaming, so:

    1. Run the test a few more times to see if the problem is repeatable. (Press the UP arrow key and press ENTER to repeat the command)
    2. If you keep getting bad result, phone your ISP tech support
    3. Explain your test results
    4. Explain that you also use your connection for gaming as well as internet computing and connection quality is very important for you.
    5. Request to be moved to a less conjested upload stream. They can do this in about 5 minutes...usually while you are on the phone.
    6. Run the test again while they are on the phone, to ensure the problem has been resolved.

This will usually fix your problem, but it is worth monitoring, because the upload stream you are moved to may eventually become conjested (as more customers are added to it)

I would suggest monitoring the situation every couple of weeks.

By running conjested upload streams, your ISP saves a lot of money. Only by monitoring the situation and complaining if the results are bad, can you ensure the quality of your connection is in tip-top shape.

Hope this helps out some of my UK blokes & birds!

Try it anyway, the benchmark you want to shoot for from this side of the Atlantic Ocean is around 115-120 when the following is concerned

I ran this test myself, and my Min was 92, Max was 97, and Avg was 95, so I've got a good solid, congestion-free connection.

Do you use your connection for online gaming such as XBOXLIVE? If so, do you experience lag? This would be why. You've got congestion. Your ISP connection needs some Robitussin. ^_^

If u dont live in the UK u can change the bbc.co.uk adress with another one that has its servers in your country.
For example if u are in the US u can put yahoo.com instead of bbc.co.uk
(if yahoo's servers are in the us ^_^ )

You're very lucky then. Anything over 120 should show noticeable lag on XBL.

Shipwrecker: I am also in NY, and you're under the average you wanna shoot for, so you're connection quality is fine.

Haha...I did it. Here are my results:

    Packet loss : 0%
    Min. ping : 89ms
    Max. ping : 304ms
    Avg. ping : 99ms

And here are the results for Google (California)

    Packet loss : 0%
    Min. ping : 34ms
    Max. ping : 596ms
    Avg. ping : 53ms

I need a place in New York to test if my ping can remain under 10ms :D
