I am working on a school graduation project and am using renders to make sigs as my project. This site HAS helped a whole lot already for the sig making part, but i need some more text help right now.

To make this an actually project that can pass i need to look into why sigs are done and the history behind sig making. Here are some questions I have that are gonna heklp me. Feel free to answer any and also share any tidbits of information you know about sigs and its history/purpose. Please stay on topic most of all.

1: Did sigs start in forums?

2: Why do we make sigs?

3: How much to sigs say about the person wearing them?

4: Why go through the trouble of making such elaborate sigs?

5: Why do we call them sigs?

Well, I will do my best to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge. Others may have different knowledge though, so here goes...

    1) I think signatures actually started on pen and paper, basic letters, with the use of caligraphy, it would make sense for that to be the first artistic style signatures.

    2) We do we make sigs? I think its different for everyone. Some do it for fun, some do it as a way of leaving their "calling card" so to speak whenever they post something, so that people know who they are.

    3) Some times the sigs say nothing at all about the person, other times it can say quite a bit. It can reflect their interest, their mood from when they made the signature, stuff of that nature.

    4) I think people go through the trouble of making elaborte sigs as a form of self expression. Its just a style of art, and art is just a means of expressing ones inner most self.

    5) We call them sigs because they are placed in the signature area of our forums and emails.

So I hope those answers help you some.

    1. i think they started in forums...i dont know where else you would use them...

    2. we make them because we are bored, and they are time consuming when we have nothing better to do. it also helps us get used to whichever program we are using to make the sig, to gain experiance with the program for further use.

    3. it tells us how experianced they are with the program and there sense of style and creativity.

    4. to gain respect from fellow forumers

    5. because they are your 'signature' and your own creative peice of work that tellls people about yourself

    1) These kinds of sigs? Yes. A signature is initially a way to identify yourself, but these are taken on a much larger level.

    2) For the fun of it. It's a hobby.

    3) State of mind. Creativity.

    4) It's art. You want to make it look as good as you possibly can.

    5) Sigs is short for signature. ( Answer to #1 )

1: Did sigs start in forums?
doubt that. Sigs most likely started from large art. I mean look how long advertisments have been around. I figure sigs are just like any other advertisment but are shown in different sizes. First time I got a computer I was seeing pepsi popups and such and sig prob were just the same but in smaller versions.

2: Why do we make sigs?
to express art in a smaller way, show off, or give yourself a signature

3: How much to sigs say about the person wearing them?
can say alot pending on how much effort is put into it

4: Why go through the trouble of making such elaborate sigs?
to become better, sigs also are great to improve on detail

5: Why do we call them sigs?
    sigs is short for signature

Quoted for truth. I'd go bigger, like digital art in general.

    1. As far as I know..I think I've only seen sigs used in forums since that's the only place I've seen with a "signature area". o_0

    2. hmm. We make them for ourselves, for other ppl. Some make them for rep or credits . Others do it for fun or just to get better at something fun that they may like.

    3. Well, it can tell you their intrests or the things they like. Perhaps even what their current mood is or what their general personality can be like.

    4. Well they want to make it as good as it can be I guess. Pushing their limits further with ideas, creativity, imagination trial and error. Nothing wrong with getting better at something. :)

    5. Forums have a signature box. I think of a digital "signature" no different then writing a letter for someone by pen and paper. You may sometimes end with

    Yours Truly,
    Michael Jones.

I guess I see it as your way of leaving your own print on a forum. Showing your interests, personality..etc.

anyways, just to answer your questions.

    1. probably not- but theres no significant use for them anywhere else other than a forum.

    2. hobby, anyone trying to make money with them wont get far in life.

    3. usually the attitude of the person carrying a good/bad sig will tellyou more about the person than the sig itself.

    4. they can't do anything better.

    5. Just liek handwritten signatures define a person- sig define a person and his creativity.
