Best File Type?

What is the best file type to save as when uploading and viewing on web?
Becauses my friend uploaded my sig, i saved it as a jpeg, but its blurrier (i know its compressesd).

png - i think not 100% sure but am sure some one else will tell me if am right or a noob

JPEG at 10 quality setting

PNG's are only good for transparency

Yup.. make sure you save your JPEG at the highest quality.

I only use .gifs for animation.

And png's for renders, but I also do png for sigs too and it comes out just fine.

By date of original development:

.BMP
Windows bitmaps are of the earliest origins. They can display images flawlessly with no compression, but that is their flaw, no compression. Due to this their file size is large and the use of .bmps are highly limited on the web, most would suggest never using due to the nature of the format. These are essentially everything compatable.

.GIF
.GIFs were developed by compuserve. These images are limited to only 8 bit color, but support single-level transparency. .Gifs compress file size using non-lossy compression where adjacent pixels of identical color are saved very effectively. Because of this, images using large blocks(or rather long rows) of a single color are best saved in this format. This file format also supports animation, and thus they have become the standard image for animations, though they are still limited to 256 colors and a single level of transparency. This format is highly compatable with most browsers and OSes made within the last 5-10 years, depending on the feature(IE: transparency or animation)

.JPG
the JPEG format was developed by an independant group of artists who wished to have a file that did not have the horibly large file size of a .bmp without the restriction of 256 colors. JPEGs support 24bit color. They compress using lossy compression which essentially results in the distortion of an image due to the exclusion of certain bits of data which are a result of the saving algorithm, thus the lossy part. This distortion however is unnoticable at lower levels of compression. Jpegs are comonly used for photographic images, or in many cases, graphical work requiring extensive amounts of colors. This format is highly compatable with most browsers and OSes made within the last 5-10 years.

.PNG
The .PNG format is the newest mainstreme format. With specifications in the development by the W3C, it is looking to be the most versatile format out. This format supports up to 24 bit color and 8 bit transparency, essentially meaning what you see in your program is what you'll get when applied to these settings. At these optimum settings however, the file size tends to be quite large, exceeding that fo a .jpg greatly. If the image is set as 8 bit greyscale, the size will go down dramatically, at the cost of color information, it still supports full 8bit alpha chanel transparency however. When it is set to 8bit color(non grey scale) it only has single level transparency support., but the filesize is very efficient compared to that of a .bmp, a .gif, and a .jpg. The compression algorith for this file format is very similar to that of .gifs in that it is non-lossy and saves rows or blocks of the same color value very efficiently. It saves blocks of the same color more effectively than .gifs. From what I have seen PS has meager support for using all of its save functions and paintshop pro has the superior optimizer. The .PNG format is relatively new and has full support from the newer version of mozilla(firefox included) Netscape, and a few other browsers. Internet Explore 6 does not have full support for .PNG trnsparency and by photoshop default, the partial transparency appears a shade of grey. If optimized in a diferent program, the color displayed in IE may be selected.

.MNG
Very similar to .PNG save for the fact that it allows animation much like .GIFs. Currently there is little support for it though, this may change in time. At one time it was supported by mozilla and netscape, but for some unmentioned reason they excluded support in their latest browsers.

Interlacing:
The presence of interlacing affects how an image appears as it is loading on a webpage, if an image is interlaced it will appear to load more smoothly and will display somewhat quicker than if it wasn't interlaced. On increadibly small images, it could result in faster load speeds and lower file sizes, on larger images though it tends to increase the file size.
