Png?

ok, i know that .png files allow for transparency, but whenever i try to save them (i click on the disket symbol on the upper left when i put the cursor on the pic), it only saves it as a .bmp! does anyone know how i can save or open the file as a .png, so i don't have to use the magic eraser when i put it in photoshop, potentially cutting out some of the render's brighter spots?
