Ive used it like once on another forum, but what basically is it?

I know for one that it is an IM, but is there more to it?

I also heard you can pass files as well like in a p2p...

I can see the threads of how to connect with IRC, but what is it?

Is it like a very powerful messenger, or what?

(if this has been posted before, I could not find it in search...)

    Basically....yes.

Internet Relay Chat is really a server that people via clients connect to and share instant messages with other users. IM like msn messenger you would normally have to add people to your contacts list and you can then talk to them through text. With IRC, the server will have a list of public rooms (channels) which you can join. The messages you send there are seen by everyone in the room. You can also send messages privately to people so similar to IM in that way.

It is a bit more complex than that...theres thousands of IRC servers that you can connect to with various protocols etc. so if you want to look into it further try reading http://www.irchelp.org/irchelp/new2irc.html although it might send you to sleep.

To actually connect, you need a client and as you say theres a few topics here already that explain how to connect. Unlike IM though, you don't need to have the same client to talk to someone on IRC. One could be using mIRC and another xchat for example.

A lot of IRC users use it simply for P2P nowdays as on some networks there are rooms specifically set up for that purpose with hundreds of users sharing files. Not something that I would personally encourage people to do...but the option is there if they want to.

Check the "creapy funny crap: quotes" sticky at the top of the forum to see what IRC rooms looks like.

    Hope this helped.
