You might need to flash the bios of your CD/DVD burner. Go google the flash program for the make & model of your burner.

List what type of burner that you have (make/model). Scan your comp anyways for viruses. Your win 32 files might be corrupted. If nothing else turns up, check the jumpers on your burner & tell us how your IDE's are connected. For example IDE 1 = burner to HD to MB. Also, what software are you using to burn your CD/DVD? They I can tell you if you would need to flash your burner.

take the cdrom out, put it in another pc and see if it works. If it does its a windows problem.

hm.some advice dont use norton use another virus scanner - Norton does not pick up any viruses - Personal experience - hm..for ur CD Device go into your BIOS setup check if the device is picked up on there if its not then theres something wrong between IDE connectors of some sort within the PC

Did you try cleaning it out?

Try running programs like, avast or avg for viruses and adaware, spybot s&d, and microsoft antispywaree.

    have you tried system restore?

Im surprised that no one has suggested use a different brand of cd. also, make sure that its the right format, aka dont use a dvd in a cd, etc.

see if you can use another cd (like a game cd or something).
also, it may be best to borrow someones else drive or somehting to burn the assesment, so that you can hand that in, and concentrate of fixing the drive.
