I have seen this problem around GR more than once, and the problem is that when i double click a FOLDER it opens up a search box instead of the actual window. for example, i double click my pictures, but instead of my pictures coming up, a search box appears to say i can search my pictures. i have been into my computer and set the file things to defaults.I will pay 50 credits to the person who can solve my problem. it started a few months ago when i had a major virus, but its removed now, heres a HJT log just in ccase: Logfile of HijackThis v1.99.1 Scan saved at 18:37:27, on 10/18/2005 Platform: Windows XP SP2 (WinNT 5.01.2600) MSIE: Internet Explorer v6.00 SP2 (6.00.2900.2180) Running processes: C:\WINDOWS\System32\smss.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\winlogon.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\services.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccSetMgr.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccEvtMgr.exe C:\WINDOWS\system32\spoolsv.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\CTSvcCDA.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsrte.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MPFSERVICE.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\SPAMKI~1\MSKSrvr.exe C:\WINDOWS\Explorer.EXE C:\WINDOWS\system32\hkcmd.exe C:\Program Files\Java\j2re1.4.2_03\bin\jusched.exe C:\Program Files\Dell\Media Experience\PCMService.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\DSentry.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\ccApp.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasServ.exe C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsshld.exe C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\agent\mcagent.exe C:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\mps\mscifapp.exe c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsescn.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee\SPAMKI~1\MSKAgent.exe C:\PROGRA~1\McAfee.com\PERSON~1\MpfTray.exe C:\Program Files\iTunes\iTunesHelper.exe C:\program files\qttask.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe C:\Program Files\Microsoft AntiSpyware\gcasDtServ.exe c:\PROGRA~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcshield.exe C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.exe C:\WINDOWS\System32\svchost.exe c:\progra~1\mcafee.com\vso\mcvsftsn.exe C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe C:\Program Files\LimeWire\LimeWire.exe C:\Documents and Settings\Owen\Desktop\hijackthis\HijackThis.exe R1 - i dont want to wipe my PC, or pay a specialist. i just want to know if anyone knows how i can fix this problem. its not a vital problem, but it gets very annoying when your in a rush, you cant open folders fast.
Use http://iamnotageek.com/ to check are any of your running processies Virus or Spyware. Thats all I can advise.
no way norton, i had norton once, got a virus, norton didnt do anything, had to phone norton to ask how to remove it, call cost was £12, and we had to pay the £30 for their time. but anyway, i have SBSAD, Mcafee, Microsoft Anti Spyware and another one, i forget the name, thanks il check out that site. and sorry i just noticed this is in the wrong forum. should be in computing.
the best thing for you to do is go to a computing forum such as http://forums.tomcoyote.org and sign up and post your hijack log there as they are experts with computers and can help you fix the problem. The thing is you need to be patient as they are getting a lot of logs and not just yours
tell me what version u r pc is like windows 98 xp and what company hp or dell or others it would be easier for me to remmeber that i check back so drop me a pm saying u gave the info here ok
If you double-click a drive or folder, Search Companion may start and the drive or folder may not open. If you configure settings for other actions that are associated with drives or file folders (for example, Open Command Window Here or Print Directory Listing), Windows may perform one of these actions instead of starting Search Companion. NOTE: If you configure the Single-click to open an item (point to select) setting in Windows, this problem may occur if you single-click a drive or folder. CAUSE This problem occurs when you open the Edit File Type dialog box for the Drive or File Folder registered file types. For example, this problem occurs for folders if you complete the following procedure: 1. Open the folder, and then click Folder Options on the Tools menu. 2. Click File Folder in the Register file types list, and then click Advanced. 3. After you perform this procedure, the None setting is removed from the value data for the Default string value in the following registry key: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell NOTE: This problem occurs even if you do not create a new action, edit existing actions, or change the default action in the Edit File Type dialog box. RESOLUTION WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk. To resolve this problem, edit the registry to set the value data for the Default string value in the registry keys that are described in the "Cause" section of this article to none: 1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe). 2. Locate and then click the Default value under the following keys in the registry if this problem occurs with folders: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Directory\shell If this problem occurs with drives: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell 3. Click Modify on the Edit menu. 4. Type none in the Value data box, and then click OK. 5. Quit Registry Editor.
