i was wondering... you know how you can buy hosting space on a server? well, i was wondering if you could install Windows Server on a computer, and use that instead for free? or do you still have to register a domain name, or can you just use the IP address? any help would be greatly apreciated! thanks a lot in advance!

Sure you can use a home PC as a server, but it would take lots of time and knowledge to install on the server what most hosting companies offer. Also, for it to be a server you'd kinda need it to be on all the time.

You dont have to register a domain name - You can just use the IP - But domains are so cheap and IP addresses hard to remember that its worth the $8/year for a domain.

thanks a lot both you! :D

Mustang- can you download a Linux server for free?

EDIT: I was looking around and I found something called Apache server. Is this a good server to use? All I want to do is host some of my sites. ^_^

you can download any linux distro, it's just extra stuff for servers you have to install.

Apache is just another program like PHP, MYSQL, and others. a good thing to have on any server, tho.

apache isnt a program like php and mysql, its different

apache is kinda waht really runs the webserver, like if your running windows, your server wont work, unless u got apache running in your task bar
php is a program you install (server side scripting) so that you can make webpages in php and your computer can execute them
mysql is along the same lines as php, except it makes like tables and databases and crap :P

anyways, yes you can make a server out of your old computer, and no you dont need to buy domain, you can use your ip, you can get cheap domains for i think $2.99 at yahoo.com

the only problem is, does your ISP support it, i know i spent forever configuring my perl, php, sql and apache so that it would all work together smoothly, only to find out, when i made it, people outside of my router couldn't connect to it, so i phoned up my ISP and they said they didnt allow port 80 or port 21 forwarding, unless i wanted to spend like $100 a month on internet

So before you start configuring everything, phone your ISP and ask whether it would work or not :)

edit: oh yea, and u dont need windows server 2003 either, you can just run win xp

or if you really wanna challenge yourself (its a challenge if youve enver used linus before) you can dl a linux and run a linux server

most linux have php already installed and apache and stuff, like with the linux that ive used before (name completely slipped my mind atm) had apache already built in, and within a matter of minutes i had a linux server running :)

grr, it's a PROGRAM, like PHP is a PROGRAM, MYSQL is a PROGRAM

Yes, it does work differently, I'm just saying its just another program, not that it works the same...

edit: and you would want a domain, unless you want people to type in 'xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx', 'whatever.com' is easier...
