It would be hard... But The gaming companies and crap most likely WELCOME people using their wallpapers and rendering them... It spreads publicity, on DA however, That is someones actual copyrighted artwork, so unless they give permission your screwed.

I'm a memeber of DA and use other deviants stuff all the time.....most people put in there devations/posts that you may or may not use for commercial or personal use. If its not posted in there devations, then I always ask if its ok to use out of common respect for the author of the image. Most of the people there dont mind at all that you use their stuff....as long as they are credited in some way for the original image that you are using. Like a link to their page at DA or simply stating the authors name.

DA has a section that you can request images for projects that you might be working on. Others will send you links to their pages that might fill the requirements of the image that your looking for. You can even state in your request for an image that it will be used in a commercila manner. That way the person replying to your request already knows that you will be making money from it. Thats just another option for using images that are at DA.

As far as brushes go, download them and use them all you want. they wouldnt be there if you were not allowed to use them. An author will usually state if they can be used in a commercial manner. If they dont then just simply ask the creator of the brushes. Chances are if you were not allowed to use them with out buying them than there would only be a image preview of the brushes and no option to download them.

The reason that DA images, applications ect.. are such a "risk" to a designer, is that you are in direct contact with the creator of the image. With the gaming renders found here it is a little harder to get in contact with the image creator, most gaming comps dont mind that you are using these images because its free advertising for their products. You are saving them millions in advertising costs by passing around their products from forum to forum. all your doing making others aware of their product at no cost to them. Plus your not making any money on it. Forum credits dont count as income, cause its not real money lol.

People complaining about spending credits for renders is one of the stupidest things i've read. Its not like your gonna go and buy a car or put a down payment on a house with all those credits you've saved up. They can only be used to do stuff HERE so get over it lol. By giving another memeber credits all your doing is telling the person THANK YOU. For doing the work that your lazy ass was not willing to do or unable to do. Same goes with exchanging credits for pre-made sigs. And again the there is no real money being exchanged between the designer and the "buyer" of the image. So you really have nothing to worry about.

Thats my 2 cents worth lol.....

well as some one in this thread stated he has never seen credit given to the original artist well im here to prove that wrong. i used two images by suzi9mm from deviantart.com and because she was selling prints i asked her if i could use the internet images to create a sig for myself which included credit in the form of "Original pics by suzi9mm" in the sig and then putting a hyperlink in the sig to her site. she agreed and while i sent her a hyperlink to view the final work to see if she would allow it she never responded but did give me creative control on the use of the images in a signature via email.

I'm a deviantart member, and I've been ripped.

One of the reasons it's just a big deal is because ripping pictures of game characters is NOT the same as ripping someone's personal artwork for two reasons. The first is that everyone will be able to recognize a video game character so the person 'rendering' it (even though cutting out the background of a picture really isn't rendering) can't claim that the original artwork was theirs. With stuff posted on deviantart, it's very easy for someone to claim that they made the artwork originally; except for pieces by more popular artists on there (suzi9mm, blueblack, larafaerie, etc), no one would know.

Also, as has been said, most gaming companies don't care if people use their images; it's free advertising. Art posted on deviantart is personal art that someone spent a long time making. It isn't made for other people, it is made for them. It belongs to them and them alone, it is NOT public domain. People often put terms in their descriptions or journals on there stating how or if people can use their art; I do not allow mine to be used for anything by anyone, whatsoever. There are many people on there who've been ripped so many times that they have to watermark all their art. I've only been ripped 2 or 3 times, but if it happens again I'm going to watermark all of my things.

Most artists on dA, if you ask, will allow you to use a piece of art for a sig so long as you credit them as the original artist. Claiming that you made the piece or not crediting, however, is illegal, as the artist owns the copyright, not you. And simply changing a couple things does not mean it's an original piece made by you.

Ripped artwork is taken seriously there, there's an entire forum for reporting ripped pieces.

So yeah. Don't do it unless you get express permission.
