Im having problems with my speakers and headphones. Whenever I try to plug my headphones into my speakers, they never work and no sound comes out of both the speakers and headphones. The speakers are Realtek AC97 Audio and the headphones are Sony h.ear headphones (Link)

I've tried other headphones also but they dont seem to work so i would assume that it the problem lies in my speakers.

well i have a degree in audio engineering so i will try to help.
first of all this sounds like a problem with the connection at the speakers. it is normal for speakers to mute once u put headphones in. do the speakers work again when u take the plug out? if so, then its a connection/or headphone problem, but more likely a connection. do u get any sound if u force the plug in and wriggle it around? is there any rust on the plug or connection? if u cant solve it by answering the above questions, i would unscrew the casing and install a new socket. very easy to do. just need a basic knowledge of soldering. anyways hope this is of some help. kinda hard to help without being there.

ya i get sound once they come out but once they are in, no matter what i do no sound comes out of either of the two units. It's also probably not the headphones since they work fine with my mp3 player (rio cali) and walkman.

make sure u move them around a bit to see if it works..mine are fine but dont work right in my speakers..
Getting some others to test might help also..not sure though.

Hmm..how bout this, Control Panel<Sounds and Audio then go to 'Advanced and check all the settings on the sound'

Are you plugging the headphones in ports on the front or side of the case? Or in the back?

The back should already be wired correctly to the motherboard. But, if you're using a front or side port... it's possibility you/they didn't connect the ports correctly to the motherboard. If this is the case, you'll have to check your wire connections to the motherboard from the case.

Also, try going to device manager and see if the audio card is having any troubles. If it doesn't show you any problems with the device... try updating the drivers.

or you may have your sound card volume way low... try turning it up to the highest possible volume.

I knew a computer once that wouldnt play unless you had it as the highest possible volume. then it died a few days later.

Make sure there is a driver in control panel->sound.
