Illustrator, if im thinking of the right thing, is like Adobes version of Fireworks, in that it does similar things. As hoffy said, vector drawing. Whereas photoshop is for editing images themselves. Hope i helped
Photoshop is for making rasterised stuff, like sigs and not-so-big pieces, Illustrator is for making clean sharp images that can be enlarged to any size you want.
