I just about had enough of my mom telling me that I can't leave my comp on 24/7. I live in Racine, Wisconsin, is there a chart or calculator that can tell me how much it really costs to leave a 450 watt computer on 24/7? of course I can turn my monitor off when not using it.. Either that, or tell me a place I can get some solar pannels, install them, and run my computers sorely off of solar. I do have a little porch off from my room where I could install it, then be able to brush the snow off them in the winter months. I'm just friggin tired of her telling me every day to turn off my computer when I'm not using it, because it costs immense amounts of money. And tonite she said that the price is going to go up 40%. What bull. It went up 1.3% since last year. Of course, shes a newspaper reader, so she believes shyt like that... My dad, on the other hand, could care less, he leaves our family comp running all the time. And my grandpa, he's 85 and lives alone, He leaves his comp on 24/7/365, has about 6 different pills, lives on an oxygen tank 24/7 to help him breathe, and I don't hear him complaining about a large bill... *sigh* oh :censored: it all... Once I graduate from college, and get a good job, I'm out. Then I'll laugh at her for being a dumbass.
Write out the energy consumption in a math equation and show her the percentage of monthly electricity it uses. Then figure out the monthly cost. I'm betting your comp only uses ~250-300 watts/hour at idle. Thats 4-5 lightbulbs. At 9.91 cents per killowatt hour, thats 2.48-2.97 cents an hour. Which is 17.85-21.38 dollars a month for 100% uptime. You are saving 5-6 dollars a month by turning it off when you sleep(assuming you sleep 8 hours a night). I got the average price for electricity in wisconsin here
"Either that, or tell me a place I can get some solar pannels, install them, and run my computers sorely off of solar. I do have a little porch off from my room where I could install it, then be able to brush the snow off them in the winter months." yout kidding right? and why would you keep your comp on 24/7?
don't you know how to I'm a torrent and p2p person. I download stuff like mad. I hate to have to shut down my computer when I'm downloading a big file. And for torrents, I want to keep seeding as long as possible, but I often have to turn off the computer, so I'll lose the connection.
it could probably use less if you set it to energy conservation in BIOS and you effectively leave it doing nothing. In slep mode, it only consumes about 4-5W. Also, I was able to get my comp to run off of a 200W PSU(it restarted while doing intensive things though) so you can assume you can probably squeeze it down to only 150W useage if you get the software optimized fully for low useage.
you have to take it in for the CRT monitor as well... It takes up quite a bit of electricity when on. of course I'll just turn it off at night and when I'm not using it.
you do save money if you shut off your comp at night, trust me im a college student who goes to a geek college. but i wouldnt suggest leaving your comp on all night anyway, it decreases the lifespan of your computer hardware. also its a good way for your machine to get compromised.
theres alot of fights about that... I heard that leaving your computer on will put less stress on your components when not being used, like your hard drive, cd-rom, etc. Then I heard that leaving your computer on stresses your components, like you said... I don't know which to believe. My grandpa left his HP computer on 24/7/365 and it's been about a year, no break downs, just his cd-rom seemed dead, but we restarted it, and it worked fine.. so I guess it depends on the computer.
Same. But i solved that by getting limewire. it can shut down your comp after transfers, saves cash and my mum don't yell at me anymore...
Just turn off anything you dont need if you arent using it..and Limewire works too.. I also keep my computer on 24/7.. I dont even turn my monitor off but I'm gonna change that now so it auto turns off..its just that my monitor gets extremely messed up when I turn it on..its kinda green and the picture is distorted for a while...but hey, I wont notice it when I'm sleepin Btw, as said, there is a power option in the BIOS but I've never tried it personally..
That is the dumbest thing I have ever heard, under normal operation the lifespan isn't affect as much as when restarting, and every time you boot windows the code tweaks just a little and eventualy it will get far enough "out of whack" that it will F*ck up on everything (trust me if you don't reformat you will get errors out the ass) I even explained that he would only save a few dollars, compared to ther things, the cost is nothing. I haven't shut my comp down in 2 weeks. I have a 93 percent up time, same with my last computer, its was overclocked too and it lasted 2 and a half years. I am also a hardcore BT user, I upload about 200gb each month. I am constantly uploading at ~100kb/s while im not on it.
that's what i heard from the sys admin at my school (sometimes he asks me to help him with his work ^_^ ) he told me that turing on and off your computer decreases the life of the moving components (like the HDD). i found a site that kinda confirms what i'm saying. the author says that " I leave my machine running all the time. Leaving it running all the time is good for the hardware... as it keeps the machine at a constent temp." i hope that helps!
Thanks, I knew glitch's way was a myth... I am currently looking into solar power. It will save me money in the long run... just run your computer on solar... pay for the pannels once, never have to pay monthly.
A couple of nights wont make a big difference We let him on 24/7 too, to download movies etc. and ur computer is just fine..
