    Doing a simple search, would have saved you the time.

    3dsmax, maya3d, spazz3d, poser3, terragen, cinema4d, cool3d, truespace3d, bryce3d, etc etc etc

    All the programs I mentioned have different strengths.

    3dsmax- for vehicles, bigger pieces, odd objects
    maya3d- animals
    spazz3d- everything, but lower quality
    poser3d- 3d art(humans, etc)
    terragen- 3d landscapes
    cinema4d- abstract renders, small 3d gifs
    cool3d- small 3d gifs, animated objects.
    truespace3d- Vehicles/small details
    bryce3d- 3d art(humans, etc)

    etc, etc, etc

    Graphics = Adobe Photoshop
    after that, the next best is PaintShop Pro that I know of, but thats nothing compared to PS

    As for modeling check out what BFTP said

    EDIT: You changed ur question..but still..same answer probly. But Paint Shop Pro really isnt for special effects I believe.

    MAYA>EVERYTHING!!

    unless your dedicated to learning it i suggest not going into it, its hard unless you want to do that work and learn it

    theres some of my latest maya work

    http://img223.imageshack.us/img223/5628/cyclops3wu.jpg
    http://img300.imageshack.us/img300/5430/co...guitarhq6vp.jpg

    just a little taste of what its ccapable of, i dont even get close to using it to its full potential

    ]

    maya, it first started as a visual effects program anyway

    3ds max is mostly used for gaming models
    maya is based toward highly detailed movie productions
    lightwave is pretty good from what ive seen
    c4d is pretty good too

    these four are top of the line in my opinion
