I know most people use windows or mac, but i was thinking.... what if i do a dual boot with linux. Well first of all umm i have no idea what the best distribution is.... but maybe someone will have some good ones in mind (dont know if i want to go red hat, etc) Try and give a good ------ technical reason why its good and nothing like windows/mac pwns linux without any strong FACTS just opinions
they're good because linux based operating systems are [usually] very efficient and have a well made microkernel and the operating systems based on such said kernel are modular in design. Ideally, we'de all be running on linux. in the real world though, M$ has game support(and decent driver support) and OSx has stoners and fanboys who like to look at a pretty bar while praising a multibilliondollar corporation for being different. for the record, I tri boot ubuntu linux(AMD64) Windows Xp --- x64 and Windows XP ---.
I heard that Linux uses less resources than Windows so it lags less. And what's this about game support? Does that mean Linux can't support games?
I have used SuSE 10.2 for a very short time. I couldn't get it pick-up my wireless connection and 90% of my activities on the PC involve the internet, so I went back to Windows
no it can it's just that in most DirectX games performance is not as good compared to windows and is usually a hassle to setup.
xelink i know linux as a whole is a great OS but there are MANY versions of it since its an open source thing..... i want to know what is one of the better versions of it
he said for the record he uses ubuntu. he didnt say it was the best. i would use kubuntu instead cause it uses kde and it looks pretty =]
I just use gnome, seems easier, lower learning curve... beside after you install beryl eyecandy no longer becomes an issue http://youtube.com/results?search_query=beryl&search=Search
yea i had beryl on my ubuntu system too but the 3d desktop didnt work and i didnt feel like working on it more so i played with kubuntu but yes ubuntu has a good community and is easy
Or just download the Ubuntu Live CD and test it before you install it, Ive used the live cd a few times, Just boot the disk and away you go, Although it can lag a bit but it definatly works
Ubuntu is great, easy to use and has a very helpful community, you can always try the live cd before installing to see if everything works. It comes with 3d desktop effects which you can enable with the click of a buttons after you install nvidia drivers, which is also very simple, just enable it in the restricted drivers manager and it will automatically install them.
FYI he might not have an nVidia card, not everyone does... on another note I could never really get decorations to work through that. I just installed beryl the manual way, worked better for me.
beryl is a lil confusing to install if you dont know much about linux but its worth it and you could also order live cds for free here https://shipit.ubuntu.com/ i did that and now i have ubuntu and kubuntu cds all over my floor =]
thanks for the help i will give ubuntu a try, it was either that for fandora(sp?) or openSuSE from what i could tell(btw i do use an Nvidia only a 6200 but theres not many options left for agp users need new pc soon)
