Bisdale's Guide to a fast clean virus and ad free computer!

Is your computer running slower then it used to?
Want to speed it back up?
Well here is my free guide to fixing your computer without spending a doller.

All you need to do is follow these simple steps.

    1. Download Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy and Avast Anti Virus.
These are all free programs and are very trustworthy and well known.

    Links:

    Ad-Aware
    Avast
    Spybot Search & Destroy

    2. Install these these peices of software unless you already have them. If you are already running an anti virus program that has regular updates dont install Avast.

    3. After installing run updates for all three programs to ensure their virus , spyware and adware databases are up to date.

    Avast automatically updates itself.

    4. Scan your computer with all 3 programs and delete or quarantine all the files Ad-Aware and Spy Bot find.

    5. Do steps 3 and 4 every week.

    Handy tip

Go Start Menu >>> Run >>> Then type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) and click "ok"

Then go to the "Startup" tab and deselect all of the programs you do not want to run on startup (when your computer turns on). Windows xp will run fine with nothing selected. I suggest your keep the programs like msn messenger, your firewall and your antivirus software selected just to save hassle.

You will also need a Firewall to stop unwanted people accessing your computer or sending you unwanted files.

I suggest you download Sygate Personal Firewall, it is one of the top rated firewalls and is free.

You are able to control the internet access of each individual program that broad casts to the internet or to your computer.

    Download: Click

    I hope this helps!

Nice guide! I would also add that people should use a firewall. A free one such as ZoneAlarm would even suffice...

Yeah 80% of people do. Its just the 20% that might find it helpfull. They have to learn from somewhere dont they...

Mozilla FireFox is a much better alternate to Internet Explorer, you should mention that in your post, or at least how to make IE more secure (disable ActiveX, etc). Nice guide though; I doubt 80% of the people know that and some will find it very useful.

Nice guide, will definetely help those security illiterate people. Also, be sure to check your Task Manager for suspicious services every once in a while. If you're unsure of a process, google it.

sall good BUT id change one thing:

Never use MSConfig to disable startup programs no matter what others have recommended. MSConfig is for troubleshooting purposes only. If you use it to disable startups and then run the program, you may cause what is known as a "memory leak" which does all sorts of strange things to your system. And disabling programs and services with it can get you into trouble that only a repair install can get you out of. Please note the warning found on the Microsoft site http://www.microsoft.com/technet/prodtechn...cca4ddde5e.mspx concerning MSConfig.. Instead, use one of the following startup managers.
    00.. Codestuff Starter.
    http://freedownloadswindows.com/65276/starter_56141.html
01.. Mike Lin's Startup Control Panel is an easy way of controlling the startup programs.

    02.. Pacs-Portal Startup.
