You do realise what the difference between Bits and Bytes are, don't you?

1byte = 8 bits. So if you have an 8mbit connection, your max potential speed will be 1mbyte. So if you have a 10mbit connection, 1.2mbytes per second sounds exactly right.

Your ISP can throttle your connection, etc. etc.

I have a 10 mbit connection, and I rarely get 1/10th of that.

Usually downloading things at 50-250kb/s.

=/

... Sometimes I'll see it go to 600kb/s.

best way to test out your download speed is to download a big file from like Microsoft. I can max out my connection most of the time on MS servers and I have a 16/2 connection.

Depends where you're downloading the file from.

Download from highspeed unthrottled services (microsoft/adobe) or from bittorrent using a high number of seeds (distros being a good example) and do it out of ISP peak hours, usually between 12am and 7am, there will be less local traffic and traffic ISP side so theres a good chance you'll be able to max your connection

I think I may be right in saying that you will never get that 10mbit download speed because that connection is hosted on a box with like 10-50(depending on the company) and the more people on the slower speeds you get as it is shared between you. This is something called a contension ratio. Makes downloading at night seem to make a little more sense  I know a few ISPs over here in the UK are ------s when it comes to these (Tiscali to name one of them <_< )

Flash forward to 2017...

Google has speed tests of its own. Google "speed test" and you should get something. It's accurate enough for peak speeds.

One related thing would also be network speeds. I test this by transferring files across computers/NASes on my network. Windows 10 does a decent job of profiling transfer rates.

Just plug the ethernet connection directly to your machine, run the speedtest.

Having a great time in Ireland, currently on 240Mb connection! Here's one i'd saved on Speedtest.net from 2015!

Due to upgrade to 360Mb soon
