View Full Version : What Would You Do For 12.5 Million Gb?

05-11-2006, 06:11 PM
Imagine having computer memory so dense that a cubic centimeter contains 12.8 million gigabytes (GB) of information.

Imagine an iPod playing music for 100 millennia without repeating a single song or a USB thumb-drive with room for 32.6 million full-length DVD movies.

Now imagine if this could be achieved by combining a computing principle that was popular in the 1960s, a glass of water and wire three-billionths of a meter wide. Science fiction? Not exactly.

This sounds awesome!!!!

Such a big leap in storage devices would mean that no software can use the available memory for many years. Virtually infinite room for data and programms.

doubt there that many songs in the world :)

05-11-2006, 06:26 PM
TB would have been easier.,

05-11-2006, 06:28 PM
yeh... I knwo what yuou mean.. I mean a 10000mb hd was infinite really hard to fill, when we get 1 or even 2GB HDDs we'll never run out of space...

FYI programming gets less efficient, we'll need 100-200TB HDDs with a decade or so, and 1000-100000TB HDDs a decade or so after that just to keep up, remember programming gets less efficient as complexity raises, HL5 will be a marvel and will likely use a good part of a TB.

also note that in the future, people wont' settle for 2mb/s music, they'll want 32 or64mb/s

05-11-2006, 09:00 PM
i'd go for that! :)

05-11-2006, 09:27 PM
12.5 million GB = 12.5 Petabytes ^_^

it's funny, cuz PETA bites. or rather, they dont. unless PETA = people eating tasty animals

metric prefixes - interesting! (http://www.essex1.com/people/speer/large.html)

U never know...that is a pretty trick question...

05-12-2006, 12:22 AM
Wow :o

05-12-2006, 01:06 AM
I wish that colud happen and I could have infinite disk space. I seem to be filling up 250 GB hard drives in 2-4 months.

05-12-2006, 02:53 AM
OMG Thats hot and i want it!

People For Ethical Treatment Of Animals... or you poking fun? because vegetarians do eat too.

05-12-2006, 03:32 AM
LOL next time, people can be stored in hard drives  *imagination XD*

05-12-2006, 06:18 AM
-drools- really i couldnt fill that even if i wanted too

05-12-2006, 08:01 AM
I want this!!! omfg..... whoaw awesome

woah...thats alot

05-12-2006, 10:10 AM
yeah but when this is normal a random game would be like
100 gb

AM Nielz
05-12-2006, 10:30 AM
For now, that's alot, but i can imagine we having that in about 20 years. Remember when Bill Gates said: "32 KB should be enough for everybody"

05-12-2006, 11:39 AM
that is alot of space wow think of what you could store on there

05-12-2006, 11:42 AM

I doubt it

05-12-2006, 03:24 PM
that wont happen for years so stop dreaming xD

Sour Apple
05-12-2006, 03:31 PM
that would be amazing lmao

05-12-2006, 03:35 PM
you can just call them 12 tera bytes :)

05-12-2006, 04:51 PM
because tera - 1000 GB

It would instead be 12,500 Tera Bytes.

We are talking about 12,500,000 Gigabytes.... per cubic Centameter...

So, you have about 100 cubic centameters... which would be 1.25 Pentabytes...

05-12-2006, 05:32 PM
wow that sounds crazy

05-12-2006, 07:49 PM
Oh joy! I can have enough room to download enough movies to have Paramount Studios sue me! =D

Don't think I'd ever use that much space at the moment, so nothing really special about it.

05-12-2006, 08:16 PM
how big u think the hd would be

.E d g e
05-13-2006, 01:20 PM
I won't fit in there. :P

[ED] Aose
05-13-2006, 01:32 PM
That would be crazy, now you just need enough RAM to run it.

05-13-2006, 01:44 PM
Tera = 1024 GB

I would wake up from my dreams!!!

05-14-2006, 09:42 AM
This could not be cooler. If it ever makes it, it would be really dangerous though. Imagine how easily you could steal data. You can store every single file in the US inside one briefcase. You can work at NASA, and smugle every data bit out in a thing you can hide behind your upper lip. Dangerous.

05-14-2006, 08:29 PM
That sounds awesome. :D

05-15-2006, 09:29 AM

Thats way way way too much

Who the hell would be able to use that much space - Thats just a crazy amount of storage for anything :D

Well in the near future everything goes like ... Tron :D

cut down on the porn

05-15-2006, 05:36 PM
I can't even fill 10 Gb. What more if it's 12.5M?

If I do have it, I'll just brag about it.

05-15-2006, 05:47 PM
*Just sits anc copy + paste a folder filled with porn

Heck, wit the way people making everything HD now adays, I wouldn't be amazed if people filled up terabyte upon terabyte with HD video, HD music, HD pics. Stuff just continues to get larger and larger

05-16-2006, 01:49 AM
Is there enough info too put on it ?
Dont think you'll get it filled.

05-16-2006, 05:04 AM
Everything can be filled.

05-16-2006, 05:22 AM
I wouldn't buy something that i would never be able to completely use.

05-16-2006, 05:33 AM
A simple question requires a simple answer:

05-16-2006, 02:16 PM
Ahh yes thats a lot of hd.. but like I always say " welll gotta find a way to fill this one up " lolol
